Beard hair is coarser than scalp hair, and it grows out of skin that gets washed with whatever is used on the face. A beard oil stays on the hair and the skin beneath it. A mask works differently: it goes on wet hair, sits for a few minutes and rinses out — which is exactly why it can carry heavier conditioning agents without leaving a beard greasy for the rest of the day.

Mask or conditioner
A rinse-out conditioner is built to be quick — thirty seconds and out. A mask stays three to five minutes, and that time is what lets it do more than smooth the cuticle. On itch and flaking
Most beard itch has little to do with the hair. It is the skin underneath, stripped by face wash and never given anything back. Softer hair helps, because coarse ends stop scratching the skin they sit on — but the skin is the part worth paying attention to.
